Off-grid futures: Addressing gaps, demands, and potential

AMPS Livable Cities Barcelona conference

Presented at the AMPS Livable Cities Conference, this research explores the growing role of off-grid housing within the global transition toward more resilient, sustainable, and energy-independent communities. Drawing on emerging evidence from Australia and international case studies, the presentation examines the intersection of housing design, renewable energy systems, climate resilience, and community wellbeing. It highlights critical gaps in current research, particularly around the social, spatial, and architectural dimensions of autonomous living, while identifying opportunities for design-led solutions that can reduce energy demand, improve resilience, and support future housing needs. The work advocates for a more integrated approach where architecture plays a central role in shaping the performance, liveability, and long-term success of off-grid communities.
